KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- Producing a stamp design at such a small size can be a challenging task but when you have the passion, a great design can come easy, said former stamp designer Peter Howeveket Khang.

Khang, 63, who had worked as an illustrator for an advertising firm, had designed more than 12 series of Malaysian stamps between 1983 and 1997.

He said his passion for stamp design began with a keen interest in stamp collecting and studying stamp designs from the collection.

His design which featured a 'keris' as the graphic element won him the best stamp design in 1984.

"I was engaged by Pos Malaysia as they knew of my ability to design and enthusiasm in stamps and my first design involved the Malaysian hornbill series.

"Since then, I have designed more than 12 series," he told Bernama when met at the Kuala Lumpur World Youth Stamp Exhibition (KLwyse) 2014 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), here, today.

Among Khang's stamp designs are the fruits of Malaysia series used for 10 years, the protected wildlife of Malaysia, 25th anniversary of Parliament and the 20th anniversary of Asean series.

Khang said he had a particular interest in wildlife conservation and using wildlife as the design element had brought out the best in him in contributing something valuable for the nation.

"A lot of research has to be carried out and various agencies, including universities, must be consulted in coming up with a great design and to emphasise a message," he said.

KLwyse is the first and biggest ever stamp exhibition held in Malaysia.

The exhibition is jointly organised by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Philatelic Society of Malaysia (PSM) and Pos Malaysia.

The six-day exhibition, which began on Dec 2, has some one million stamps from 46 countries on display.
