PUTRAJAYA, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- October will be the National Disaster Preparedness Month each year to alert the people to make early preparations in facing floods.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the campaign and programmes on preparations in facing floods would be held involving all relevant parties and using the existing media channels.

"We already have the plan and simulation but preparations at the lower level are important, while education and preparedness of the masses is a continuous process towards improvement in managing disasters.

"The month of October is chosen as it is considered a suitable time because the monsoon season usually starts around November.

"But we need always to be prepared as a disaster can occur any time," he said when met by reporters after attending the handing-over of cheques for contributions to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Humanitarian Fund (TKKMM) to assist flood victims, here, Wednesday.

At the event, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin witnessed the handing-over of the contributions amounting to RM2.57 million to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission chairman, Datuk Seri Halim Shafie to Ogu Salim Omar, deputy secretary of the National Security Council.

The TKKMM 13999 online channel for the fund opened on Dec 24, 2014 and ended on Jan 31 this year. It was initiated by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry with the participation of telecommunication companies in the country.
