KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- The Department of Standards Malaysia, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), allocates about RM10 million a year to develop public awareness on the role of standards by organising various activities.

Malaysians must know the standard of a product or service to ensure that goods procured are of quality or otherwise.

Its senior director, Ridzwan Kasim said his department found that the awareness of Malaysians regarding the matter was still very low compared with other developed countries.

"We are actively organising seminars, workshops and campaigns for government agencies, schoolchildren, university students and the general public," he told Bernama after a talk show 'Ala Carte Pagi' (Bernama Radio 24) at Wisma Bernama Monday.

Standard aims to regulate the quality of services and ensure the safety and performance of the product. Safety and quality standards are the key to maintaining and improving the lifestyle of the people, he said.

On the celebration of World Standards Day on Oct 14, he said this year's theme was 'Standard: The world's common language' which implies that standard needs to be observed by all segments of society in the world.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Technology and Society Division head Aisharuddin Nuruddin, said MCMC has also taken steps to increase consumer awareness by promoting the use of the application 'Check Your Label'.

He said the application helps consumers to not buy goods that do not comply with the standards or to get communication products that do not have a certification label.

"The application, developed by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), helps consumers to know the standard of the communications product," he said.

MCMC, the regulatory body for the communications sector, enforced 10 Mandatory Standards and 24 Technical Codes developed, based on relevant national and international standards.
