05 May 2016

GENEVA, 5 May 2016 --- Malaysia picked up five awards in four categories at this year’s World Summit on Information Society Forum (WSIS 2016) which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland from 2 – 6 May 2016.

The Kemaman Smart Community and Eco2 projects are two among the five awards that Malaysia bagged during the WSIS 2016 prize giving ceremony which saw more than 150 ICT ministers, deputy ministers, heads of regulatory agencies and captains of industry from around the world attending. Malaysia’s delegation was led by Dato’ Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia.

Emerging as the winner of the E-environment category, Eco2, a next generation green data centre cooling technology, was developed by Malaysian green technology manufacturer Green Data Centre LLP (GDC).  It features the world’s only renewable, biodegradable, sustainable and non-toxic ICT specific coolant that reduces energy consumption and carbon footprints by half.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) acted as the Technology Kickstarter whilst the Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Bhd (MTSFB) under MCMC and the Green ICT Working Group facilitated the development of the proof of concept for Eco2. Green Data Centre LLP was represented by its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Rajendra.

At the same ceremony, the Kemaman Smart Community Project, an initiative by MCMC, gained international recognition when it was listed as one of five projects with the highest votes out of the 27 projects listed under the Communication and Information Infrastructure Category.

In addition, the Kemaman Smart Community Project will also be listed in the WSIS Stocktaking: Success Stories 2016 – an ITU e-publication.

The Smart Community initiative was introduced in early 2015 in Kemaman, Terengganu. The main objective of the Smart Community initiative is to uplift the lives and socio-economic status of the community using ICT as a platform to provide faster and more effective access to information. One of the flagship programs under this initiative is the flood management system which leverages ICT in managing flood and disaster management.

Also in attendance for the prize-giving ceremony were local Smart Kemaman Community champions, Air Putih State Assemblyman, Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar; Kemaman District Officer, Rosman Roslan and Kemaman Assistant District Officer, Hj. Mohammad Abdul Rahman.

The Multimedia University (MMU) won two awards in the E-science category. Both entries are computer aided diagnostic systems designed to assist doctors and radiologists. The first is to detect breast cancer through the analysis of MRI scanning, while the second is for early ischemic stroke detection.

Malaysia’s fifth award was picked up by CyberSecurity Malaysia. Titled “Securing the Cyberspace through International Collaboration of the Computer Emergency Response Teams”, this award was given in the International and Regional Cooperation category.
