The digital divide remains a significant challenge for rural and indigenous communities worldwide, limiting their access to education and economic opportunities. In Malaysia, the Orang Asli communities, particularly those in remote areas like Kampung Orang Asli, have long struggled with inadequate telecommunication infrastructure and limited digital literacy.
In response to this pressing issue, the MCMC Perak has taken a proactive initiative to address the challenge. A strategic collaboration was formed with the State Communication, Multimedia and NGO Exco office, Sekretariat Usahawan Negeri Perak (STeP), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Perak Social Welfare Department (JKM), Pos Malaysia, State Education Department (JPN) and Jabatan Orang Asli Negeri (JAKOA). This collaboration culminated in the “From Roots to Routes: Boosting Economic Development and Social Empowerment for Orang Asli Sungai Tonggang” program held on 19 Disember 2024 (Thursday) at Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Tonggang, Perak.
The program featured a series of informative briefings and engaging activities designed to enhance awareness and knowledge among participants. Highlights included presentations on the initiatives and functions of the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), a digital economic empowerment and cultural preservation opportunity.
To further reinforce the message, MCMC Perak organized a booth activities and interactive games. These activities served to actively engage attendees and improve their understanding of safe communication practices and good Internet usage.
The event witnessed the participation of 80 individuals and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. This success underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in empowering communities to navigate the digital world safely and confidently and fulfill the potential of digitalisation.
